AgriFood Skills Australia is running a new project focused on weed eradication and productivity, involving the development of a broad range of land management skills for up to 26 Indigenous workers in the Katherine region. The project is consistent with AgriFood’s regional approach to workforce development and productivity, and has significant local support from the Katherine community.
The program will connect local and regional Indigenous jobseekers, local employers and the broader Katherine community. Participants will undertake a Certificate II in Conservation and Land Management to be delivered both in classroom and on site over six months, and put their new skills to use during a 6 month internship with a regional employer.
There will be a rigorous recruiting process for participants. Professional mentoring and support will be provided to trainees and their communities as well as employers over the course of the program.
Participants will bring state of the art skills and knowledge in weed eradication and land management to their internship employers, and employers will be well positioned to qualify for wage subsidies to host interns in their enterprises. The project will help to tackle critical work shortages in the Katherine region, promoting investment in a skilled labour force and long term employment for Indigenous youth.
AgriFood will be hosting an Open Workshop in association with its project partners to formally launch the Building Regional Futures in Katherine project on 1 February.
The Workshop, to be held at Knotts Crossing Resort in Katherine, will be opened by Ms. Anne Shepherd, the Mayor of Katherine.
