Integrated compliance business risk management system for the agri-food industry

 
Agri-Food Skills Australia has produced a training program that will give primary producers, agri-food enterprises and registered training organisations vital assistance in managing the diversity of regulatory risk in agribusiness now and into the future.
 
The following compliance risks will be addressed through the use of an integrated system:
  • Environmental Management
  • Animal Welfare
  • Food Safety
  • Occupational Health and Safety
The council developed this innovative program with funding support from the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. It is designed to assist enterprises in reducing their red tape burden and support regulatory risk administration. It is designed specifically to meet the needs of agri-food businesses large and small in managing the burden of compliance and relevant risks.
 
The program was developed with input from the agri-food industry and it was refined through a pilot training course for participants from the seafood industry at Port Lincoln earlier this year.
 
Key outcomes of the pilot program include the development of tools and techniques to:
  • reduce the administrative burden in relation to risk and compliance,
  • develop an understanding of and improve risk management processes in the specific areas of Occupational Health and Safety, Animal Welfare, Environmental Management and Food Safety.

The materials will be sufficient for a company to explain and describe red tape and regulatory risk to its managers and staff. They are customised for agri-food businesses and training organisations.

This program will take you step by step through the Australian Risk
Management Standard 4360 Risk Management. This Standard has proven
popular and robust and it has been adopted for the first International
Standard on risk management, currently in draft for issue in 2009.
 
The Risk Management Standard process will be used to identify and assess risks relating to the areas of compliance above. The resultant risk assessment can be used as the basis for managing these risks to ensure they do not eventuate.
  • Gain A Recognised Australian Qualification In Risk Management
As part of the training programme attendees will be offered the opportunity to
complete an assessment task and obtain a unit of competency in risk
management from the Certificate IV in Business.
  • Be Introduced To Risk Management Software
The training program will follow the steps in risk management software specifically tailored to follow the Australian Risk Management Standard process.

Red tape software 

The council has access to the risk management software program that was trialled during the pilot project. The software program, known as Wynrisk, is a commercially available risk management software program that facilitates a logical and systematic application of the Australian Risk Management Standard AS/NZS 4360.
 
The software comprises:
  • An easy to use database allowing self-assessment of risks and controls.
  • Broad based to provide a ‘big picture’ view of the key risks.
  • Sufficiently detailed to ‘drill down’ into specific areas of compliance risk.
  • Intuitive, as it guides you through the steps of the risk management process.
  • Saves time and cost by retaining your risk management data and provides up to date reporting for compliance purposes.
